Open Records is a progressive, techno, minimal music label intended to create a base for Australian electronic music, artists & DJs on the international stage. Founded in the lush tropical paradise of Cairns in 2006- we have expanded to include representatives in the major dance centers of Australia & across the world such as Greece, Spain, France, Finland, Israel & New Zealand to name a few.
The Open Records sound is not categorized by genre-definitions or beatport catagories. It takes elements from a broad range of electronic styles, including progressive house, trance, techno, electro, tribal & minimal- winding them together with a characteristic deep rhythmic groove, spacious atmospheres, hypnotic bass-grooves & focus on intelligent, cutting-edge musicality & production.
The beginning of year saw the release of our second full-length compilation, Festivus compiled by label founders Suspekt & Woodsman. Featuring renowned artists such as Wombat (a new project from Australian master producer SunControlSpecies), RPO, Fiord (aka Antix), D-Sens and U & K (Tero Civill Remix) alongside rising stars Urban Monkeys, 2Kings in Motion, Eegor, GMJ, David Weed and Embark- Festivus was a strong return to form for Open in 2008.
Since Festivus, Open has released a series of successful digital EPs from artists like Fiord, Interpulse and GMJ. So far the tracks are receiving great feedback and are have done well in the charts Progressivehouse.com/MyPromoPool and Beatport. There are also releases in the pipeline from artists like Kasey Taylor, Wombat, Solead, Urban Monkeys, Spikers and and many more.
As well as our ever- increasing artist roster, we have a strong team of Australian DJ talent which all offer their own interpretation of the Open Records sound. This allows us to perform in a variety of applications, while still maintaining a tight label network that stretches up and down the entire East Coast of the country.
We also host a monthly club night in our hometown of Cairns at Cadence Nightclub, one of the city's premier indoor venues. So far we have hosted respected acts such as Lutzenkirchen, Dousk, Kasey Taylor and Fiord among others, establishing it as one of the biggest and most respected underground dance nights in Far North Queensland.
Open Records will continue to strive to bring the very best in electronic dance music to both Australia & the world. Our simple philosophy of “music-first” ensures every project we embark on is of the highest standard, paving the way for our strong base of talent to leave their mark on the international stage.
Open Records – forward-thinking progressive music for the festival dancefloor.
Open Records is proud to present another fresh new artist in the shape of Spikers – one of Portugal’s best upcoming producers and live acts.
Born in Lisbon, Pedro Vasconcelos studied Spanish guitar and music theory from a young age.
After experimenting with bass and electric guitar in several garage bands, Pedro found his true calling with the discovery of electronic music in 1997 and he hasn’t looked back since.
After Djing for many years, he built a studio in 2002 and the Spikers project was born.
Blending elements of techno, minimal and electro influences with strong bass-grooves, intelligent musicality and top production work, Spikers will no doubt be a hit around the globe with tracks already signed to labels like Plusquam, Drag’n’Drop, Carica Deep, Soultribe and here on Open Records.
The Lockpicker EP showcases the diverse nature Pedro’s sound, with the title track Lockpicker taking a sub bass-driven minimal approach and the B-side Kentucky Fried Chick favouring a stronger techno-esque style.
Both tracks have already been extensively tested on the dancefloor and are versatile tools both DJs and home listeners alike – and have already been given the tick of approval by both Australian and Portuguese dancefloors.
Now for the rest of the world!
Open Records is proud to have Pedro part of the team and make sure you keep your eyes and ears peeled for more from the Spikers studio in the near future...
